Education Money-For-Grade: ex-CRUTECH VC advocates for stiffer penalty against defaulting Lecturers
The erstwhile Vice Chancellor of the Cross River University of Technology, CRUTECH, Prof. Anthony Owan-Enoh, has called on higher institutions to come up with stiffer penalties to discourage lecturers from involving in Money-For-Grades.
Owan-Enoh disclosed this to newsmen last weekend at the College of Education, COE, Akamkpa, shortly after delivering a lecture at the combined convocation of the institution.
The immediate past CRUTECH VC and former Provost of COE, Akamkpa, maintained that when stricter measure are taken, lecturers who intend to or already involved in the act will shy away from it.
He said ‘sorting’ as it is often called will be a thingy of the past and the glory of Nigeria Universities will be restored and the institutions can compete with their counterparts in other parts of the world.
Speaking on static ‘Quality Assurance and the Architecture of Educational Excellence’, the ex-VC identified shoddy management of academic matters as bane of academic excellence in Nigeria, stressing further that if educational matters were given priority attention, the falling standard of education can be reversed without any hitch.
He urged the managers of institutions of higher learning to rise up to the occasion and put an end to the ugly trend where students’ grades are traded for cash with a resultant effect leading to institutions of higher learning churning out low quality graduates who might find it difficult to cope in the labor market.
He said that irrespective of gigantic and state-of-the-art libraries, laboratories and lawns owned by institutions of higher learning, if men and women of proven integrity failed to impact good moral values whereby graduates produced by their institutions can afford to stand on their own when it comes to passing through integrity test when it comes to academic matters.
“Why are we unconsciously converting our huge beautiful looking libraries/laboratories buildings to mere ornaments, examination to mere formalities, project writing to mere rituals, lecture attendance to a matter of choice, above all certificate we offer to a mere piece of paper without substance?”, He asserted.
Owan-Enoh further said that when lecturers allow students to “sort” aside becoming incapable of the making their required contribution to national development as expected of them, the lecturer and student may end end up failed integrity test when situation arises.
“Anyone who sorted, altered students scores, tied examination scores to purchase of his textbook or handouts, who rarely lectured students, doctored continuous assessment scores is unfit for appointment as provost, Rector, VC or principal of a school.
